Dedicated to the jazz city of New Orleans and loved ones lost during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, my rendition of this traditional Appalachian folk song was inspired by African-American singer/pianist/activist Nina Simone, who from a decisively female vantage point, recorded this story about prostitutes in New Orleans in 1962, before the Animals famous 1964 version. Features Mike Strickland on piano.
